Law Society reviews Vernon lawyer’s conduct

The owner of a Vernon law firm is under investigation by the Law Society of BC.

North Valley Law’s Leonard Hill Marriott was notified by subpoena on Dec. 13 that the association’s disciplinary committee plans to hold a hearing on Marriott’s “conduct or eligibility” as a member of the law association.

The Law Society alleges that between May 2019 and September 2020, Marriott “failed to provide your client with the quality of service expected of a competent attorney…”

The citation alleges that Marriott failed to do one or more of eight counts, including adequately investigating the facts and identifying legal issues. Recognize the limitations of your ability to handle issues and take appropriate action. Effective communication with your customer; and reasonable attention to the documentation review in the customer’s matter to avoid unnecessary delay and expense in correcting errors or omissions.

The citation also alleges in the same context that Marriott prepared and submitted materials to the BC Supreme Court that it knew or should have known contained false or misleading information. that he could not ensure that the contents were clear and accurate.

The society alleges that Marriott failed to disclose the existence of a deceased person’s will. Identifying the deceased with other potential beneficiaries or heirs. And it accurately represents the value of the property.

In November 2019, the citation alleges that Marriott knew or should have known that it was making false or misleading statements when it told an attorney that it did not have and had never seen a valid will for a deceased person.

Marriott has over 30 years of experience as a professional attorney.
