“But most companies just focus on what you can do,” Panik says. So, (what’s) more important than any training you can have is to be able to show a track record: “I’ve built X thing.”
Bootcamps can be a useful tool for beginning web developers who want to learn, but a certificate from a bootcamp alone is not enough to guarantee you a job. Potential employers want to see passionate candidates demonstrate their skill sets through a portfolio of original projects. Panick says he’s more likely to hire a candidate who has created projects beyond what the bootcamp required of them.
“No matter what kind of training you’re doing, you’re not going to learn these kinds of skills in a classroom,” he says. “You have to go out there and try and learn by doing.”
